I just seen this on IndieHipHop.net so I had to share it.

How do I make my video go viral? This is a question I get asked often. It’s as if there’s a magic formula, out there somewhere, that can be applied to any video to make this possible. There isn’t one.

Want your video to be seen by millions of viewers? Create something that makes it hard for viewers not to share it. If you’re not a mainstream icon with a fan base eagerly waiting for your next visual, you better take the time to create something irresistibly buzz-worthy.

Before you finish your next video, think; Will this video entice the viewer to share it with his friends? Is there an element or scene in the video that compels the viewer to watch it again?

If the answers to either of these questions are no, then you don’t have a viral worthy video. And no amount of Facebook postings or Twitter spamming will change that reality. If you’re fortunate enough to get a video shot to one of your songs, here are a couple of tips to consider, if you want to create one that’s hard to forget.

Concept:

Having a good concept or story to tell, helps the viewer become more engaged with the visual imagery of your video and how it connects to your music. Performance videos can sometimes be entertaining, but if you create a video that only features you performing the lyrics to your song, don’t expected it to spread very far.

Oftentimes the director shooting your video has a some great ideas and experience with creating concepts, so is good to work with him or her on developing one that will make your video interesting.

Shock value:

You’re competing for attention with many other artists and other forms of entertainment. What will people remember about your video after viewing it? It doesn’t take a big budget or a bunch of props to create a video that people can’t help but talk about. Adding something surprisingly shocking or funny to your video will definitely help it go viral.

A video’s virality is not determined by how much money you spend on it, buying Youtube views, or how many half-naked strippers you cast in it. You need creative ideas. Make a list of videos you’ve seen lately that you can’t forget about, and study them to find out which elements made them stick with with you. You want to create the kind of video that promotes itself. People are annoyed by aggressive promotion. They’d rather discover your video through a friend. If you have to repeatedly post the same video day after day, on your Facebook timeline, to the same bunch of friends, to make them pay attention, you have to go back to the drawing board.

Videos are potentially a very powerful way to spread your music, image, and message. No amount of promotion will make a boring video interesting. Don’t make the mistake of putting more time and effort in the promotion of your product and not enough in the quality and creativity of the product itself.

Now, a lot of you reading may ask why in the hell do I have this old well groomed gentleman who looks like a nobel peace prize winner as the image for this post & that question alone is what is going to start off my discussion. That gentleman is hip hop pioneer Adam Yauch better known in the hip hop community as MCA from the famed Beastie Boys. The Beastie Boys were one of the first signees to the illustrious Def Jam label which was formed by the super eclectic Rick Rubin in his dorm room in Weinstein Hall at New York University. To get the ball rolling, MCA sadly just passed away from cancer on May 4th and it hit me like we are losing all of the people who helped bring Hip Hop to the masses. Just this year we’ve lost MCA as well as Heavy D and a couple years back we lost Guru from Gangstarr
What these deaths are coming to show me is not only the tone, but also the speed in which our genre is changing. I’m an 80′s baby myself so I came in during a time when Hip Hop was becoming a force not only in our neighborhoods but in society as a whole. But as time went on things started to change what some can arguably say for the worst. Once companies seen how they could capitalize off of the music the quality of it started to decline at a rapid pace. So what started to happen was labels stopped putting money into artist development and started creating cookie cutter artists which I like to call the Milli Vanilli Effect. No longer was hip hop being used and understood as an outlet for struggle, it started to be used as a tool for greed.
Each generation of Rap had there hardcore drug dealing street artists, there dance/feel good artists, their conscious, political, fight the power groups & their eclectic artists (I was so glad to hear when PM Dawn got whooped out at the awards show). But now with most of the new wave of artists coming in it seems that the music is starting to lose it’s feeling, passion & emotion which aids to the Old School vs. New School Hip Hop debate. Now everybody’s a weed head who sags their skinny jeans and rock snap backs to match the latest retro pair of Jordan’s that have been re released for the umpteenth time. Originality is seeming to be lost in this new school hip hop world we’re living in now. Don’t get me wrong, every artist that comes out isn’t following this formula and those are the ones who give me hope that we might actually be ok and be able to keep pushing the genre forward and keeping it innovative instead of just some plain old bullshit.
The internet helped as well as hurt us tremendously when it came to music. It gave us a chance to hear new artists but it also helped to take some of the quality from the music because it was being thrown out at such a rapid pace that there was and is no time to sit down and digest what an artist is actually saying and going through. I remember when Canibus came out and was just SPAZZING on tracks and if I didn’t understand a metaphor or didn’t know a word he used I would go look it up which helped me to see how dope and ill he was as an artist as well as expand my knowledge a bit. But once music was needed on an “I needed that shit yesterday” time frame we lost that focus in the art form as well as that focus in the artists. I won’t stand up for all the older ones though because some of them fell way the fuck off as well when they stopped focusing on their lyricism and subject matter. A lot of them even admitted they didn’t feel the need to focus on what they were saying anymore which is why I despise Cam’ron until this day because he was one of the first to spear head the I can say whatever and people are still going to rock with me movement. Hell, he had dudes wearing 4x pink t-shirts and Du-Rags. So there’s definitely not much that can be said there.
As I close this out the heart of this post is to see how you guys feel about the old as well as the new school. Is the talent level the same? has the game become watered down because of the artists or the fickleness of the fans? or do you feel hip hop is even in a good space right now? Please let me know your thoughts and thank you for reading.

Today I would like to introduce you to the lovely Anita. A well faceted talent from the lovely city of LA. She wars many hats in the her home town consisting of Blues Singer, songwriter, web architect, Digital Divide advocate and aspiring actress. I met Anita a while back through twitter and we have stayed in contact since and recently we have been putting work together in the studio. Emailing tracks back and forth to get that perfect sound. Before her album releases I definitely want to get to work with her in person because I feel that’s when a producer and artist come up with the best material because everything goes hand in hand and ideas can be shot back and forth on the fly right then and there. Her old soul carries through her music and the goodness of that is if you think of anything that was created in the olden golden days more time. dedication and love was put into every thing a craftsmen put their hands on. From music, to a home, to furniture, buildings etc… She is the epitome of this and her album will show that. I am definitely happy to be apart of this project and will keep you guys updated as things roll along further. Keep in touch with her through her website as well as her <a /href="https://twitter.com/#!/AnitasDream">twitter page. Welcome to Dream Living baby.

Motivation can be something hard to come by at times. This is something I know way too much to be only 27 years old. I posted my motivation as my featured picture for this post. To catch you up, back in 08 I was supposed to be out of here. The doctors told my father right then and there to start thinking about funeral arrangements because I may not make it during the ambulance ride. Sickle Cell didn’t want me to breathe any longer but I fought through it and I’m here typing now because of my will, passion, love & drive. I have a very horrible memory but I’m sure the hope of seeing my then 7 month old daughter is what had me fighting through all that reckless & excruciating pain I was going through at that point in time is what got me made me stronger with those crutches, stronger with those memory tests even though I lost oxygen to my brain and lost even more memories. My daughter was and is still my main motivation but now I have my wife & step son to push me even farther with every hope, every scheme, dream & thought that I have now. The purpose of this rant was for you all to see that you can go through some real heavy shit (pardon my language) and still have the drive to come out on top. I’m not letting up any time soon & I’m actually going to be putting more pressure on this music game to force my way in and bring my team along with me. I definitely want you all to come along with me and see that my word is true. Sign up for the mailing list & let’s take that ride together yall. Hit me up anytime even if it’s not about music and you just need to talk. No fake industry shit around here. It’s nothing but real so let’s GO!

We’re baaaaaack lol These past few months I can honestly say I was unmotivated, drab & just down right dead. It kept seeming that life was throwing all that it could at me with my health & all which had me in the danger zone (cues Top Gun music) & then I got a call. My man P-Prop seemed to be going through his own tales from the dark side story as well even though he had been doing great musically & touring with his More Than Music family. So we shot the shit a bit & decided the only way to get through it was the only way we knew how. MUSIC!. He had a new story to tell & I was the man ready to lay that back drop to his struggle, happiness & life as he knew it. So I’m here to announce that P-Prop & I, once known as J.P. Moore-Green are back in the lab with me executive producing his new project The Uninvited Guest. I’ll be dropping some snippets for you all soon. So please signup for the mailing list to stay up to date with our progress as we take music by storm once again.
