The Makings of Me: Fashion – Ace Of All Trades Apparel

As always my ambitious, entrepreneurial ideas come from conversations with my friends. We sit around, a random topic arises & then we crack jokes & laugh it off but my brain always locks on to the lucrative ones & wonders if I can actually make them work.
The idea to start up Ace of All Trades Apparel sparked up back in 05′-06′ when my best friend & I were laughing about how every rapper that was out was starting up a clothing line. So as usual, we laughed at it saying “we should start a clothing line” & moved on with our normal day. The rest of the evening, week & month I started plotting which turned to research, then obsession, then action. I found every blog/site that dealt with the streetwear industry & I studied/stalked them every day then I studied the beginnings of every brand that interested me & was successful. This helped me to get a grasp of what made everything as well as everyone tick. I seen the trends of the market & then devised a way to make them better & make designs that everyone could relate to and be proud to wear.
I taught myself how to use photoshop as well as took a class at University at Buffalo where I was going to college at the time then I also studied how to start & sustain a new business. It got a bit strenuous because I was doing everything by myself but then while finding everything out about streetwear & me getting into producing with fruity loops heavy around this time, I came across an artist who would have a heavy impact on me as an artist myself as well as bring me back to a time where I was hitting the rewind button to listen to a metaphor again and go crazy over it. This artist was Wasalu Muhammad Jaco aka Lupe Fiasco and the album was the impeccable 5 star leaked version of Food & Liquor. This album had my mind going crazy. I still believe, as my own personal opinion (I know how the hip hop world can be) the Intro to the leaked version of Food & Liquor is the illest lyrical delivery on a song to this date in hip hop’s history but let’s get back on track.
This album + my entrepreneurial self sufficient spirit which created some crazy ways to fund this project and bring an intern in for free by the way & the genuine love that came to grow for the independent fashion industry helped motivate me to create the first season of Ace of All Trades Apparel which through hard work, dedication & hell my obsession with the fear of losing led to a second even more successful season of the line which added female items to the brand which were actually the first to sell out and helped to get the name of the brand out a little bit more & bring more success.
The video I have above is a trailer for a dvd that I ended up buying that help me gain insight as well as motivation into the dangerous waters I was about to swim through & it might motivate some of you to start your own ventures & take over whatever industry you might be in love with. Now, I didn’t want to end this on a sad note (I mean Whitney Houston’s funeral is on right now. That’s enough sadness) but I just sent in my paperwork to the IRS to let them know I was shutting down the line. I haven’t had the money to really push it to where I want it to be but I still do have back stock which can be purchased through the link on the header bar. So, if you like what you see, go on & purchase & we can make our mark in the streetwear industry & break up the monotony that has taken over the climate + I’ve still got all these damn Yo! MTV Raps cards to give away lol.

The Makings of Me: Indie Culture

I am probably one of the most nostalgic people on this planet & this video brought me back to what I often view as some of the best years of my life. I still have boxes of unopened Yo!MTV Raps trading cards that I would give out whenever someone would purchase a shirt from my Ace of All Trades clothing line. Va$htie, who directed this, as well as a couple of other astounding videos definitely did her job with this one. I found out about her as well as more about the culture I found myself being more & more attracted to & submerged in a little bit before I started writing & eventually becoming the news editor for the online street wear magazine Format. Indie culture is the life line of society and doesn’t even get the credit for being such, which also turns to be the beauty of it. As a side note if anyone has or can find me that Run Dmc Adidas sweatshirt that Armand Van Helden has on at the 1:37 mark in a Large or XL I will give you a feature on the site as well as an Ace Of All Trades prize package. I NEED THAT SWEATSHIRT!!! (It’s honestly the reason I used this video for the Indie Culture post)

Joell Ortiz Buffalo Fitted

Joell Ortiz – Stay Schemin (Freestyle)

It’s tracks like this that keep me picking up my blackberry, putting a beat on & hitting the memo pad to spazz out with the illest rhymes my heart can beat to. I’ve been a fan of Joell Ortiz since he was first getting placements on Hip Hop Game & now he’s 1/4th of the super group Slaughterhouse. This man amazes me every time and yall know I had to put the pic up of him rocking the fitted from my hometown Buffalo NY. Now excuse me as I find a beat to spazz to.

The Makings of Me: Production Goals

I’m a well known sample heavy, digging in the crates kind of guy inspired by RZA, Just Blaze, Alchemist, Black Milk, Kanye & a handful of others but with that skill I also want to add these kinds of elements on top of the beats I produce to make the biggest records possible. Building on that point a group that I admire to the utmost is the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. The respect & admiration came along because I feel they have reached a level where they have achieved a beautiful mesh of sampling alongside live instrumentation which created the records that become the backbone of the tracks that they are creating and made sampling apart of mainstream hip hop culture again.

My man Myer always pushes me when he see’s me digging for records or starting a beat by asking “Are you making music or are you making history?” Every time he asks me that I instantly vision this video and pour everything I’m feeling into the track I’m crafting at the time. From having this mentality people that know me well always know what kind of mood I was in when I play them new tracks I’ve created. Me being the introvert that I am, music gives me that voice to shake up the world.

The Makings of Me: The Song That Started It All

Yes, this was my intro into hip hop & I’m not afraid to admit it. This was the dopest track in the world to me when it dropped in 1991 & I’m proud to say I copped this tape lol. At least Ice Cube was writing her rhymes for thos that try to backlash but yall already know I don’t give a damn. I’ve got many more videos that I’ll be posting that helped to form this insane & artistic brain of mine. Let’s start the show!

Rick Ross – Rich Forever Interview Pt.1

It’s a known fact that I’m a sucker for interviews, especially interviews with musicians. With this one we have Rick Ross speaking on his recently released Rich Forever mixtape, the success of Maybach Music Group and it’s his top billing artists Wale & Meek Mill.
